DAY 1: ARRIVAL – HORNBILL CAMP

On your arrival at Cochin International airport meet our representative and transfer to Hornbill camp at Thattekkad. On reach check in to the camp and relax.

Activities you can experience;

Kayaking; The Hornbill Camp is located on the banks of the river Periyar. On the opposite bank of the river are some of the finest lowland forests of Kerala. A kayaking trip amidst these great swathes of forests is an ideal sport for those inclined to be adventurous and explore the bio-diversity within these forests. You can also kayak to some of the villages upstream to get a first-hand glimpse of life in a typical spice growing and agrarian village of Kerala. (duration 1 hr.)

Cycling; The location of Hornbill Camp is ideally suited for cycling journeys to the countryside - spice growing villages, farms, forests at Thattekkad and the ever-inviting local population. You can go on a full day expedition or wander around at leisure through the friendly countryside! A visit to the hanging bridge near the camp would be a wonderful experience for the travelers. (duration 1 hr.)

DAY 2: DEPARTURE

Morning after breakfast proceed to visit the Thattekkad Bird sanctuary for half day bird watching.

Or else you can visit Mamalakandam Tribal village (duration: half day tour). 

Bird watching; Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary, also known as the Dr Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary is one of the richest bird habitats in peninsular India, comparable only with the Eastern Himalayas. A trip through this sanctuary would certainly be a bonanza for any birder, with over 300 species found in a relatively small area of 25 sq kms. Some of the rarely seen species at Dr Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary are Mottled Wood Owl, Sri Lanka Frogmouth, Rusty-tailed Flycatcher, Indian Pitta, Sri Lanka bay Owl, White - bellied woodpecker, Malabar Trogon, Black Baza. One can find a larger number of Endemic species seen in Western Ghats here. Malabar Grey Hornbill, White- bellied Blue Flycatcher, Malabar Barbet, Malabar Parakeet, Flame Throated Bulbul, Malabar Woodshrike, Crimson backed Sunbird, Nilgiri Flower pecker, White-bellied Treepie, Rufous Babbler, Grey-fronted Green Pigeon, Grey-headed Bulbul are some of them.

Noon transfer back to Hornbill camp for Lunch. After the lunch check out from the hotel and transfer to airport for your return flight.

The quiet and beautiful countryside is ideal for walkers to discover Kerala through its off-the-beaten- track trails and the interior villages. The lush countryside and the friendly villagers are bound to make your walk rewarding. On the walks you can walk into a rubber estate, a spice plantation and numerous farms where our guide will be happy to explain the intricacies of farm life.
